In 2017 we raised 103,000 signatures during our Headucation campaign for a parliamentary debate which led to compulsory mental health education in schools. This hugely successful campaign firmly established Shawmind as a champion of mental health in the UK, despite being a fledgling charity. Following on from this, we now focus our energy on improving mental health awareness in schools by equipping teachers to understand anxiety and support their pupils more effectively to deal with it. Whether at school or at work, anxiety is debilitating. It can destroy productivity and takes the joy out of life. We offer a range of training and interventions for both managers and employees. Today we believe that every organisation should be committed to supporting the mental wellbeing of their people and we will do all we can to help them.

Our Work

A big part of improving mental health awareness and reducing the stigma around it is simply to encourage conversations and make mental health less ‘taboo’. We host regular mental health support groups to get people talking about what’s bothering them and take a step towards getting help.

Breathe Café is a relaxed, non-judgmental safe space for people who are struggling with anxiety, stress, or related mental health challenges to come in and “just breathe”. Partnering with coffeeshops and restaurants throughout the United Kingdom and identified by a “Breathe Cafe” sticker on the door, visiting a Breathe Cafe provides one the opportunity to access mental health & wellbeing resources without the need for an appointment. Every Breathe Cafe has a member of staff trained in mental health awareness, a small library of wellbeing books, and provides access to Shawmind’s national network of trained volunteers.

BreatheUni is a new programme being piloted with Psychology students from a leading university in the United Kingdom. This programme trains students to support other students in their wellbeing journey.

ManCave is a monthly online session where people can come and talk about men’s mental health; a space for men to speak about their mental health journey, their challenges, to listen to experts and to share with other men their coping strategies. 3 out of 4 suicides are men – ManCave aims to defeat this.
