Meet Our Team – Su Hallam, Charity Manager

Having first volunteered at the age of 16 with a charity supporting people with memory issues, Su quickly realised she wanted to work within the mental health sector.

Since then, she has gained considerable experience working for Mind Bassetlaw, as well as having been a Day Centre Manager for people with memory problems.

“I knew from an early age that I wanted to work within this sector to try to make a real difference to people struggling with mental health concerns and their families and friends,” said Su.

“It’s so important to open up the conversation about mental health in our communities, schools and workplaces, as helping to lift the stigma is vital to allow people to come forward and seek support and help.”

Our community engagement programme – Breathe – has provided supportive listening and signposting to more than400 visitors since it opened last July, cementing the need for this work in Newark and beyond.

Su is now working with schools, colleges and workplaces in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire with the aim of setting up more Breathe Café and pop up hubs this year.

To support these new Breathe sessions, Su and the team are looking to recruit more volunteers to provide advice and guidance in a range of volunteering roles.

Su said: “We welcome volunteers from a variety of different backgrounds. Practical or personal experience of mental wellbeing is not essential, but a real desire to make a difference is.

“I will strive to ensure each volunteer’s individuals needs are supported and met, as a healthy, happy volunteer community is vital for Shawmind to carry out its work successfully.”

If you know someone who is interested in volunteering, please ask them to get in touch with Su via our contact us page.
