Framing the Debate Panel

On Wednesday 4th November, between 5-6pm, Shawmind, along with four esteemed guests, will be hosting a debate on Zoom, which will discuss mental health training for future teachers.

The panel will host the following guests:

Professor Sam Twiselton, OBE is the Director of Sheffield Institute of Education and also Vice President (external) of the Chartered College of Teaching. She was the chair of Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Core Content Framework committee, who defined the minimum entitlement of all trainee teachers. This was published by the Department for Education (DfE) in November 2019.

Adrian Bethune is a part-time teacher and author of ‘Wellbeing in the Primary Classroom – A Practical Guide to Teaching Happiness’ and co-author of ‘A Little Guide To Teacher Wellbeing and Self-Care’. Adrian is also the lead curriculum designer for Oxford University Press and Education Policy Co-Lead at the Mindfulness Initiative. Adrian was one of the external advisors for mental health for the ITT Framework.

Catherine Carden is faculty director of teaching and learning at Canterbury Christ Church University. She was awarded a Fellowship of the Chartered College of Teaching in 2019. She is the author of ‘Primary Teaching: Learning and teaching in primary schools today’ and co-founder of Bowden Education. Catherine was one of the external advisors for mental health for the ITT Framework.

David Gumbrell is an author, coach and presenter around the theme of resilience. He has written two books for teachers on this subject and recently one for children too. He works part time at Kingston University on the teacher training programme, teaching history and science.  David was also one of the external advisors for mental health for the ITT Framework and so convened this panel to discuss this important topic.

Those in the education sector are invited to join us to share their thoughts and insights and to ask the panel any relevent education questions.

Teacher Wellbeing Panel Discussion

Focusing on teacher wellbeing for this year’s World Mental Health Day, we have gathered a collective of education and wellbeing specialists from across the country to an online panel discussion, which will be chaired by the charity’s CEO Peter Wingrove.

Kelly Forrest Mackay, Head Teacher and pioneer of the new mental health curriculum in Wales; Elizabeth Williams, Chair of Mindfulness Wales; Victoria English, Shawmind Mental Health training partner; and Adam Parkes, Shawmind Champion, former Head Teacher and CEO of Parkes Education, will sit on the panel and answer questions put to them by participants.

Our October guest speaker is Duncan Ellison. Duncan retrained to become a counsellor following over 25 years in the media, broadcast and live event industries. As a counsellor, he specialises in working with men and is keen to encourage and empower men to find their authentic self and better understand their mental health.
